Three new additions joined the faculty of the Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at George Mason University in fall 2024.
Assistant Professor Tariq Kamal
Kamal is currently working as an assistant professor in IST at George Mason. Before joining academia in 2017, he worked as a senior software engineer from 2015 to 2017 at Medidata Solutions in New York. His research mainly focuses on the application of artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud computing in agriculture and health care. Kamal earned his doctorate in computer science from Virginia Tech in 2015.
Assistant Professor Alejandro Alvarez
Alvarez previously worked as an information technology consultant throughout metropolitan Washington, D.C., concentrating on information security and information assurance. His research interests focus on the improvement of solar flare prediction, machine learning, data mining, algorithm development, and information security. Alvarez holds a doctorate in computer science and informatics from George Mason.
Instructor Hussna Azamy
With a decade of experience in information security, Azamy worked on a variety of projects in the public and commercial sectors—including a recent role at Amazon Web Services. Her expertise spans application security, penetration testing, threat modeling, risk assessment, secure architecture, and emerging areas such as generative AI security. She holds a master’s degree in applied information technology from George Mason.
