Raedeh Basiri, assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies, has been elected Chair of the Aging and Chronic Diseases Research Interest Section (RIS) for the American Society for Nutrition (ASN).

Basiri is a registered dietitian and is an expert on the effects of healthy eating on the prevention and management of chronic disease. Her work incorporates emerging technologies, such as continuous glucose monitoring and AI-driven feedback, as tools to support behavior change. Basiri’s research experience will serve to further the ASN’s mission to advance the science, education, and practice of nutrition. Her recent work focuses on using personalized dietary recommendations combined with continuous glucose monitoring as a lifestyle tool to support weight loss—without a prescribed weight-loss diet—in individuals with prediabetes who are overweight or obese. The dual impact of poor nutrition on mental health and developing diabetes was published in July 2024.

“This position offers an incredible chance to connect with—and learn from—top scientists in our field, laying the groundwork for multicenter collaborations and advancing nutrition research globally,” said Basiri.

As chair, Basiri will work alongside ASN leadership to organize scientific conferences, facilitate international forums and webinars, foster collaboration among subject experts, and mentor early-career researchers.

“This is an opportunity to showcase the outstanding work happening in our department, college, and university—highlighting our contributions to public health and wellness both nationally and worldwide,” said Basiri.

The objective of the Aging and Chronic Disease RIS is to promote nutrition research in older adults and chronic disease-related areas using multiple research methods.
