Biography

Karen Studd, who has a master’s degree in dance from the University of Oregon, is a certified movement analyst and also a registered somatic movement therapist through the International Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Association. Currently a tenured faculty member in Mason’s School of Dance, Studd also serves as a program coordinator and master teacher for the Laban Institute of Movement Studies in Manhattan.

She has taught workshops and presented papers in Poland, Canada, Slovakia and Brazil. As a teacher of dance technique, experiential anatomy, and as a choreographer and movement coach, she is focused on movement education and personal development through movement. Although a dancer, Studd views dance as a highly specialized area of application within the larger body of knowledge that is movement itself. Her primary interest is in promoting an understanding of the importance of movement across all disciplines. At Mason, she is also affiliated with the Center for Consciousness and Transformation, teaching the Consciousness of Movement.
