George Mason University is ranked #1 in Virginia for internships.
Film and Video Studies requires students to take the course FAVS 450 Internship in Film and Video Studies. We believe internships provide an opportunity for students to gain practical experience, reflect on that experience, and apply skills learned in the classroom to the workplace. Throughout the academic year, we highlight some of the student experiences.
Why did you apply to your internship? What intrigues you the most about the position?
I applied to this internship because I saw it as the perfect bridge between my studies in Film & Video and the professional world of storytelling. My passion lies in shaping narratives that connect with people, and FOX 5 WTTG offered a unique environment where stories are crafted and shared in real time. This internship was more than just an opportunity to gain experience, it was a chance to grow as a storyteller, learn from seasoned professionals, and refine my directing skills that I will eventually carry into my career.
What excited me the most about this position was the immediacy and impact of live broadcast. Unlike film, where stories unfolded over months or years, news was an on-the-spot decision and required a level of teamwork that was both intense and inspiring. I was especially intrigued by the collaborative energy in the control room, the way the producers, directors, and crew synchronized under pressure to deliver something powerful and polished to viewers at home. That dynamic reflected the very essence of directing: guiding a team toward a shared vision while responding creatively to the unexpected.
What were your main responsibilities? Did you work on any special projects?
Some of my main responsibilities were supporting live broadcasts and pre-recorded segments by shadowing directors, assisting in the control room, and observing newsroom workflow. I also assisted in editing video clips for on-air packages and digital platforms like FOX 5’s website. Continually, I helped producers with background research, organizing materials for upcoming newscasts, as well as booking on air talent.
I also contributed to FOX 5’s celebration of interns on National Intern Day. I collaborated with the other interns to conceptualize, plan, and produce a creative video project celebrating National Intern Day. I also spearheaded the vision and direction for the final video, as well as led the initial brainstorming session and presented the approved concept.
What’s one of the most valuable things you learned?
One of the most valuable lessons I learned at this internship was that adaptability is everything. In news, you can prepare all day for one story and then have to pivot instantly when breaking news happens. Staying calm, communicating clearly, and still getting the job done under pressure is a skill I know I’ll use in every area of my life and career.
How did your FAVS courses prepare you for the internship?
My FAVS courses taught me the language of storytelling, not just technically with cameras, editing, and sound, but also in how to think critically about why stories matter. Having that foundation made it easier to understand what I was seeing in the newsroom and gave me confidence to contribute. Directing courses especially prepared me to recognize how every detail, pacing, visuals, and tone, help to shape the audience’s experience.
How did the internship help shape your career path?
My internship at FOX 5 WTTG was a huge turning point in how I view my career in film and directing. It gave me hands-on experience to the intensity and precision of live television, showing me that directing is not just about scripted stories but also about shaping real time narratives that impact audiences immediately.
This experience broadened my understanding of where my directing concentration can take me. Before, I saw myself primarily in the film industry, but FOX 5 showed me that directing is a versatile craft that spans film, television, and live media. The mentorship I received also gave me confidence that I can adapt to different storytelling formats while still pursuing my passion for creating impactful visual narratives.
What advice would you give to students considering an internship?
My biggest advice I would give to students considering an internship here is to be curious and fearless. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they’re small, those conversations are where you will learn the most. And take initiative, sometimes the best opportunities come from volunteering for something outside your comfort zone. Internships aren’t just about checking a box on your resume, it's about exploring possibilities and building real world confidence that you can’t get in a classroom. But most importantly have fun. One of the best pieces of advice I received came from Paul McGonagle, the Vice President and General Manager of FOX 5 (now FOX 2), who also served as one of my mentors. He told me, “Do what you want to do, the money will follow. It won’t be easy, so put forth all your effort now. You’re 21-22 years old, don’t put those obstacles in your head, all that you’re doing is putting up walls for your life.”
