In this Q&A, the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) sits down with club officers Ayaan Modak and Waleed Raza to explore the organization's mission, the skills members can gain, and the exciting initiatives on the horizon. Read on to discover why the GMU CS Club is a must-join for aspiring tech professionals!
Q: What's the main goal of your organization?
A: Our main goal at the GMU CS Club is to create a supportive community for students interested in computer science, where they can connect, learn, and grow. We focus on developing both technical skills and professional growth in a collaborative environment.
Q: Why should students consider joining your organization?
A: Students should join the GMU CS Club to expand their knowledge beyond the classroom and build valuable connections. The club offers opportunities to develop CS skills, network with industry professionals, and gain hands-on experience, all within an inclusive community.
Q: What skills or knowledge can members expect to gain by joining your organization?
A: Members gain insights into technical CS topics, alongside professional skills that help with networking, resume building, and interview preparation. Industry veterans from various companies also share their expertise, enriching members' understanding of the CS field.
Q: What types of events, workshops, or activities does your organization host throughout the year?
A: We host technical workshops, social events, and host organizations/panelists. These activities offer members the chance to improve their skills, learn from professionals, and connect with peers in a fun, engaging setting.
Q: Can you share a memorable event or accomplishment your organization has achieved recently? What exciting initiatives or events are you planning for the upcoming semester?
A: Recently, we held a two-day event with Amazon (AWS) where students met company employees and representatives, learned about AWS technology, and participated in hands-on workshops. Our largest event to date was our HackFax hackathon last spring, hosting over 350+ attendees for 72 hours of non-stop coding! This semester, we’re planning more hands-on workshops, speaking engagements with guests from top tech companies, and networking opportunities along the way.
