Jim Carroll, professor of Jazz Studies and director of the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra showcases the "Take a Giant Step" art installation.

Earlier this fall, the long-awaited “Take a Giant Step” art installation was unveiled. Located in the Education and Rehearsal Wing, this stunning piece draws inspiration from the jazz master work “Giant Steps” by acclaimed saxophonist and composer John Coltrane. Coltrane’s complex and technically challenging musical work represents the Hylton Center’s commitment to the cultivation and artistic growth of performing and visual artists and arts students in our region.

The art installation comprises individual, large-scale saxophone “keys” inscribed with dedications and inspirational quotes—providing a unique way to recognize individuals and corporations who have made gifts to the Take a Giant Step campaign. “It is a work of art in its own right, but more importantly it represents the spirit of this community that helped build these beautiful spaces for teaching, learning, creating, gathering, and celebrating—spaces that truly complete the original vision for the Hylton Center,” shared Rick Davis, dean of the College of Visual Arts and executive director of the Hylton Center.

Naming a key is just one of the many ways to ensure the Hylton Center continues to serve as a location for education, enrichment, and artistic excellence.

Reserve your key online, or by contacting Dylan Lambert at dlamber4@gmu.edu or 703-993-7061.
