Civil engineering seniors showcase capstone projects to industry experts

Body

Seniors who completed capstone design projects presented their work at the spring 2024 senior design project presentations. Four teams of about ten students participated, each divided into sub-teams responsible for specific aspects of their project, such as structural design or traffic engineering. A student project manager led each team and presented their project’s overall poster, and each sub-team presented a poster on their respective project component.

The event, held in Horizon Hall’s atrium, attracted a diverse audience, including industry experts from both the public and private sector, such as the Army Corps of Engineers, the Virginia Department of Transportation, Bowman Consulting Group, and Dewberry, as well as students’ teachers, families, and peers.

The projects focused on transportation and structural engineering, such as redesigning intersections or bridges, often incorporating components related to environmental and water resources.

The event began with a closed session where students presented technical details to faculty and industry professionals before opening to a broader audience and closing with an award ceremony and reception.
