George Mason University has entered into a new partnership with Knack, a tutoring platform, to provide free tutoring services for students in selected courses.
Through this partnership, students enrolled in identified courses will have free, unlimited access to tutoring. The partnership does not replace any existing tutoring services but adds extra support for students. The three-year agreement runs from 2024 to 2027.
For the fall semester, 26 classes were identified for the program based on enrollment data, DFW rates (the percentage of students receiving a D, F, or withdrawing from the course), and faculty and department interest. These courses span math, statistics, biology, chemistry, business, and public health. The initiative supports classes with up to 10,000 seats of enrollment per semester, providing academic assistance at no cost to students.
Mason students serve as the tutors, hired by Knack as independent contractors at $15 per hour. Eligible tutors must have earned an A- or higher in the course within the last two years and complete required training. Just a few weeks into the semester, over 1,000 students have already registered, and nearly 150 students have received over 250 total tutoring sessions.
