Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner MSN Program Director Shanti Chang has co-published a textbook with Adjunct Biological Sciences Instructor Michael P. Adams and Assistant Professor of Biology Norman Holland, both instructors at Hillsborough Community College. “Pharmacology for Nurses - A Pathophysiologic Approach 7th edition” will improve nursing students’ critical thinking and clinical judgment in the use of medication for specific treatments. This edition provides the most current and engaging learning experiences for medication administration and patient care.
“’Pharmacology for Nurses - A Pathophysiologic Approach’ is a comprehensive textbook designed to equip nursing students with a deep understanding of pharmacological principles and their application in patient care. It covers essential topics such as drug classifications, mechanisms of action, and therapeutic uses, providing a solid foundation for safe and effective medication administration,” said Chang.
The book features case studies, drug prototypes, and the latest advancements in pharmacology. A key feature of the book and what sets it apart from its predecessors is the emphasis on using the clinical judgment measurement model to assess, analyze, and make decisions based on patient data, ensuring any medication administered aligns with desired patient outcomes.
“This edition has improvements that will better set students up for success on Board examinations and in practice,” Chang said.
Chang also stresses how important it is to know both the clinical and community components of nursing care. As the health care system shifts to preventative health, she wants to ensure all future nurses are prepared for health care’s dynamic nature.
“We emphasize integrating community-oriented care, recognizing the broader context in which nursing occurs and the expanding role of nurses in public health. Understanding how pharmacological principles apply, not only in individual patient scenarios but also in the context of community health initiatives, is crucial for nurses to contribute effectively to public health,” said Chang. “The text explores how pharmacological principles apply in diverse community settings, producing well-rounded practitioners”
In addition to her Mason roles, Chang is a Family Nurse Practitioner and MAP Clinic telehealth provider. She is passionate about caring for underserved populations, responsible for developing a free vaccine program for uninsured children at the Fairfax County Public School Mason and Partners (MAP) Clinic.
