The Cathedral of Saint Thomas More in Arlington, Virginia, seeks section leaders/cantors and substitutes for all voice parts. The choir is composed of professional and volunteer singers and rehearses weekly on Thursday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and sings for the 11:00 a.m. Sunday Mass with a 10:15 a.m. call preceding. Additional weekend Masses for cantors are at 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday. Pay is $115 per call with additional compensation for any time over 2.5 hours. Because it is a Catholic liturgical ministry, we especially seek practicing Catholics or others with an interest in sacred music who will be a good fit for the Catholic and communal culture of our choir.
The employment period will be from Wed., Feb. 22 to Sun., June 11 (with cantor opportunities continuing through the summer). Required calls are Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday (April 6–9). Applications will be accepted through Fri., Feb. 10 with priority given to those who apply by Sat., Feb. 4.
Interested candidates should send a music resume and audio or video of a vocal solo (via attachment or link) to Fr. Vincent Ferrer Bagan, O.P., Director of Music, and cc Shaina Murphy, Music Assistant. Audition will consist of a vocal range check, excerpts from two sacred vocal solos in contrasting styles (chosen by the candidate), tonal memory, and sight-singing. Though solo singing will be required and expected, of principal importance is the ability to sing well and with leadership in both a large and small ensemble and to learn music quickly. The candidate will also be interviewed about his/her interest in the position.
