Over the summer, Mason School of Art student, Steven Luu was entrusted by the Uniting Us Organization to design a public mural. The mural would not depict a specific theme; instead, it would help people find calm in chaotic places.
Luu created two large abstract public murals (9 feet x 12 feet & 4 feet x 12 feet) to help people relax outside their homes.
“I included unique geometry forms to create a balance within the paintings. To me, geometry contains mathematics and a scientific approach where the viewers can see the balance and rhythm effect of the composition. These two essential elements interlock with the viewers and invite them to remain inside the giant paintings.”
These murals were done through the combined efforts of 28 artists, including veterans, Mason students, alumni, and community members. We all collaborated at Mason’s School of Art to create these beautiful multi-canvas works. When talking about the experience, Luu mentioned, “I am incredibly grateful to my school; nothing would have happened without the school’s constant support, especially the Department of Sculpture. I also want to thank Professor Peter Winant for allowing me to invite the Uniting Us Organization to use the studio classrooms. Mason’s School of Art is well known for its community involvement and believes strongly in art’s power to unite and showcase a community. The art created by the Mason students and Professors reflects that every year, and I’m thrilled to have been a part of such an illustrious art history at this university!”
