We are so proud to announce that MFA student Andrea Benge, known for ANDiLAND, has been awarded the Best Experimental Film award at the Sydney World Film Festival for her short Desert Air. In addition, Benge received a Tarkovsky Grant.
ANDiLAND ๐ฐ is a multi-media artist ๐จ working in the realm of sex ๐ & violence. ๐ช Raised in the plastic ๐ wonderland of Southern California, ๐ธ her work โจ has been shown all around the country ๐ including Slamdance Film Festival, Oxford Film Festival and Sydney World Film Fest. ๐
Desert Air is a dark journey down the rabbit hole of a turbulent female adolescence.
โThe theme this year was inspired by the incredible resilience and creativity evidenced by our community and our team over the past few unprecedented months,โ said Slamdance president and co-founder Peter Baxter. โThe shared journey ahead for Slamdanceโs filmmakers, alumni community, and organization is to โGreenlight Yourselfโ and triple down on not only who we are, but how we can continue expanding the many ways we support the filmmakers who are the future of independent filmmaking.โ
In addition to the U.S., this yearโs selection of films comes from Australia, Finland, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Lithuania, Romania, the UK, and Taiwan.
The festivalโs new program featured 22 short films from up-and-coming disabled filmmakers, feature actors with disabilities, or highlight the conversation of disabilities in todayโs world.
Unstoppable is entirely programmed by disabled artists and the programโs mission is to amplify the contributions of the disabled community and advocate for their rightful inclusion in our industry.
Congratulations Andi, this award was well deserved!

Artist Statement:
My work ๐ฐ invites viewers ๐ค through the looking glass of reality ๐ down the rabbit hole ๐ of my personal female ๐ psyche, a dreamworld ๐ญ otherwise known as ๐ช ANDiLAND. ๐งจ Working in several media, my campy paintings๐จ, kitschy ๐ sculptures and mischievous โจ videos create a whimsical ๐งจ๐๐๐๐ธ๐๐ฉ wonderland ๐ธ of immersive sensory overloads. ๐ I interrogate ๐ the idea of women and violence โ๏ธ through the lens of popular culture ๐ utilizing the language of ๐ entertainment & simulacra. Exploiting ๐ the female โgrotesqueโ ๐ I examine the superficial ๐ construct of reality ๐ฉ and play with the voluptuous ๐ฅ danger lurking beneath the sticky ๐ sweet surface ๐ฐ.
