Filipe Fernandes Veiga has a PhD in Machine Learning and Robotics from the Technische Universität Darmstadt in Germany and a MSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico in Portugal. Before working at Mason, he was a postdoctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Happy to steer a research group, he is eager to share his enthusiasm with students and have the privilege of enabling their own research and academic growth.
He aims to create a lab recognized not only for its stellar scientific contributions but also for its diverse, inclusive and exciting environment.
“The diversity and collegiality of Mason are exciting,” he says. “Everyone is striving to improve and help one another, and there is the opportunity to interact with colleagues and students from all sorts of walks of life.”
Veiga’s research focuses on the use of perception to develop intelligent robots.
“Currently, my main focus is on robot dexterity and tactile perception, where I have explored biologically inspired control approaches to create human-like dexterous manipulations behaviors,” he explains. “I am currently developing a course on Sensorimotor Learning and Control. The course uses several hypotheses of how humans develop their sensorimotor loops as its base, followed by the discussion of several computational approaches that exploit the same hypotheses in the control and machine learning domains.”
Outside of work, Veiga enjoys spending time with his family, reading comics, practicing martial arts, playing video games, and following soccer and Formula 1.
