As the Hylton Center’s fall Education Initiatives programming winds down, we’re reflecting on the virtual and in-person field trips, masterclasses, and other fun engagement activities that have taken place to date.
At the beginning of the school year, our Education Initiatives launched a fall virtual field trip with Latin Grammy® nominee Sonia De Los Santos. Nearly 2,000 students from Prince William County and the City of Manassas participated in this bilingual virtual field trip learning about Latin rhythms, the many instruments Sonia uses, and a variety of songs inspired by various Latin American rhythms. Local students were also welcomed back to an in-person field trip for the first time since fall 2019 for a school-time performance by theatrical Swiss troupe Mummenschanz.
New audience engagement activities around Hylton Presents and Hylton Family Series performances took place this fall and were met with robust community participation. Estela Velez, artistic director of Furia Flamenca Dance Company, led audience members in a post–performance Flamenco dance class directly following the Farruquito performance. Likewise, children and families participated in themed craft activities following each performance of SUGAR SKULL! A Día de Muertos Musical Adventure.
