Position: Gallery Director, Touchstone Gallery

Terms: Part-time, 20 hr/wk (10 hr/wk in gallery)

Salary: $25,000 plus commissions

Description of Position

The part-time Gallery Director will be responsible for the daily operation of a prestigious, award-winning cooperative art gallery with an active and involved membership located near City Center in Washington, DC. The Gallery Director will work with the Board of Directors and members to achieve the gallery’s mission, which is to educate the public through the promotion of the arts by providing artists with facilities for showing and selling their work, and by exhibiting diverse types of contemporary art. The Gallery Director will play an important and active role in communicating the gallery’s vision to the public through exhibits, openings and other public events in collaboration with the membership. The position reports directly to the Board of Directors through the President.



Responsibilities

Communicate with 50 member artists, guest artists and committees

- Review gallery staffing calendar

- Maintain gallery calendar for events and operations

- Respond to inquiries sent in by members of the public

- Attend member meetings and Board meetings

Coordinate monthly member exhibits, openings, artists’ talks, and virtual events

- Order supplies for openings and ongoing operations

- Produce press releases and promote shows as well as gallery art and events on social media and other media outlets

- Contact and maintain relationships with media critics and other art leaders and publications in the arts community

Financial responsibilities in coordination with accountant and treasurer

- Process sales through Quickbooks

- Create deposits and invoices in Quickbooks

- Work with treasurer and accountant to keep books for tax purposes

- Oversee operational invoices, payments, and licenses

- Coordinate with collectors and artists, as needed, for pick-up/delivery of art sold

Manage internships

- Hire, supervise, support and mentor up to 4 interns

Maintain social and other media presence

- Post and promote the gallery, its members’ art, and events through social and other media to increase visibility

- Maintain mailing list and send monthly emails to the gallery’s email list

Maintain gallery website

- Oversee and update website as needed

- Maintain website gallery and store Initiate and manage juried exhibitions

- virtual and in-gallery Solicit and oversee event rentals of the gallery space

Other duties as assigned



Qualifications and Skills

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in art and/or job appropriate discipline

3+ years experience in gallery or art management preferred

Experience in managing interns and working with volunteers/members

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Excellent organizational and time management skills

Excellent people skills and social poise including excellent customer service

Expertise and understanding of the operations of a gallery or retail establishment

Creative and successful approach to marketing and public relations

Familiarity with appropriate computer programs (data bases, QuickBooks, Squarespace, etc.)

Proficient in social media promotion and engagement (e.g., Instagram, Facebook, Twitter)

Ability to work with a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends
