The Hylton Center Education Initiative has extended its digital program offerings this fall to students and teachers through a multi-part Virtual Field Trip, featuring acclaimed family music artists, Dan and Claudia Zanes. Spouses Dan and Claudia have been creating music together since the day they met in 2016. The Hylton Education Initiative is thrilled to bring the couple’s love of songs to elementary age students throughout Prince William County and the City of Manassas, as both school systems engage with the duo’s’ current seven-part video series “Songs of Streets and Sunshine.” Throughout the video series, students will meet Dan and Claudia virtually, learn vocal warm-ups, gain an introduction to the Haitian Kreyol language, and learn more about songwriting. Students will have the opportunity to interact with Dan and Claudia’s music in their own individual way through hand motions, call and response, and encouragement to move with the music. In October, Dan and Claudia also led a Zoom workshop for teachers titled “Building Community Through Music.” This session was designed to give teachers ideas about how to build community through inclusive, social music-making programs in the classroom. The project is supported in part by an award from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Education Initiative is also supported by the McNichols Family Foundation, Friends of the Hylton Center, and Lillian Ballard.
