The Hylton Center’s popular Veterans and the Arts Initiative programs return this fall starting in September with two community favorites: the Ukulele Workshop Series and Songwriting Series for Military Kids.
The Ukulele Workshop Series returns Tuesday evenings (9/14 – 10/26), and is FREE to Veterans, Servicemembers, military family members, and military caregivers. Musicians of all skill levels are invited to participate in seven weeks of workshops with Glen McCarthy, instructor at the Mason Community Arts Academy and at George Mason University. If you have always wanted to sing and play the ukulele - but aren't feeling quite ready, get great tips on how to improve your singing technique and your confidence in a November 2 bonus workshop on Zoom! The bonus workshop will be co-led by Adiza Jibril, professional singer with The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own.”
If you’re looking for creative activities for military kids and teenagers on George Mason University's Fairfax campus, explore our in-person Songwriting Series for Military Kids (9/26 – 10/31), a six-week series where students can learn songwriting skills in a collaborative, safe environment. Participants do not need to be advanced singers or musicians to join this program. This workshop series is FREE and open to military kids between the ages of 10 and 17. Space is limited.
