Dr. Quentin Alexander has joined Mason as Senior Director of Advising.
Alexander joins Mason from Longwood University, where he was a professor in Counselor Education, and College Counseling and Student Affairs program track coordinator. While there, he developed an academic advising and coaching program to improve the emotional, psychosocial, and academic adjustment of first-generation, low-income, and racial/ethnic minority students.
He is a national leader with National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), where he currently serves as the National Chairperson for the First-Generation Student Advising Community. He previously was selected to participate in NACADA’s Emerging Leader Program.
His research interests center around academic advising and social justice for underrepresented student populations, and creating data-driven programs to increase student retention and persistence.
A North Carolina native, he completed his undergraduate and first M.Ed. degrees at UNC Chapel Hill. He completed his second M.Ed. at North Carolina State University, and his PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at Virginia Tech. He has also taught at VCU.
At Mason, he will develop a vision for supporting consistent, high-quality holistic coaching and advising across units. He will work closely with the Mason Care Network, the Mason Academic Advisor Network, advising liaisons in the academic units, the Fellowships office, and the Mason community to support student success.
