Priya Mallya is recognized for her on-campus involvement including her role as Vice President in Mason Rising Healthcare Leaders (MRHL).
Priya Mallya is a Master of Health Administration (MHA) student that has been awarded the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA) McGaw Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in health administration. She was selected by faculty within the MHA program at Mason in recognition of her significant involvement and demonstrated leadership.
Mallya is a founding officer of Mason Rising Health Care Leaders (MRHL), a student organization dedicated to the professional development of students in the College of Health and Human Services through networking opportunities and other valuable resources. Currently, she serves as the organization’s vice president.
“I got involved in creating MRHL because I strongly perceived the need to unify and support all students,” says Mallya on being a part of the organization. “For me, it has provided an excellent opportunity to develop my own leadership, teamwork and communication skills.” Her involvement with MRHL gave her the opportunity to be a student representative for Mason at the National Capital Healthcare Executives (NCHE) monthly board meetings.
“I got involved in creating MRHL because I strongly perceived the need to unify and support all students,” says Mallya.
She and other MRHL members have collaborated with NCHE for the annual MRHL/NCHE spring seminar. From finding an ideal venue, organizing speakers and more, the seminar demonstrated Mallya’s organization and teamwork skills. She was also able to meet a variety of accomplished leaders in the healthcare industry, including Mason alumni, that have inspired her.
When Mallya decided to pursue health administration, she looked for rigorous programs throughout the DC metro area. She was drawn to Mason’s MHA program not only for its excellent curriculum, but for the many opportunities it offered to be involved in the healthcare industry.
“After meeting with the program director, I was convinced that this would be the best program to achieve my goals,” says Mallya. Prior to the program, she practiced medicine as a trained physician in India. Her interest in healthcare administration was sparked by a drive to improve patient safety and the quality of care.
“Take every opportunity to improve and get involved with student organizations,” she advises potential MHA students. “It will ensure that you interact with your peers, faculty and alumni, provide numerous prospects for professional growth and develop connections in the industry.” Although managing academics in tandem with other responsibilities on-and-off campus can be difficult, Mallya credits the guidance of Mason’s excellent faculty that have driven her success.
