Additional fencing as part of the utility upgrades of the Core Campus Project will be in place in the center of the Fairfax Campus by the time faculty, staff and students return from the winter break.
Fencing and erosion and sediment controls will be installed beginning Dec. 23 around the grassy area between the Johnson Center and David King Hall. New fencing will also be installed around the sidewalk and some of the green space next to Planetary and Exploratory halls and extending to Enterprise Hall.
A temporary sidewalk will be in use in front of Planetary Hall, and three east-west crosswalks will be open in the construction area: leading from the Johnson Center to The Hub; leading from the Johnson Center to David King Hall; and leading from the Johnson Center South Plaza to Exploratory and Enterprise halls.
Trucks will move materials in and out of the construction zone from Aquia Creek Lane through Wilkins Plaza overnight only. The fencing will be in place until the start of the fall 2020 semester.
Also beginning Dec. 23, and continuing during the winter break, test pitting will be conducted on Wilkins Plaza to locate all underground utilities in anticipation of the plaza’s reconstruction. This will include the use of vacuum excavation equipment that can be loud for extended periods of time. The work will be completed before the spring 2020 semester begins.
Finally, a mock-up panel of the exterior wall of the new academic building will be ready for viewing by the time faculty, staff and students return from the winter break. The northeast corner of the fence around the building will be opened for a better look.
