Four George Mason University programs are ranked in the top 50 worldwide in the 2019 Global Rankings of Academic Subjects, a reflection of the university’s broad commitment to access and excellence.
Programs in the Antonin Scalia Law School are ranked 19th in the annual rankings from the prestigious ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. The public administration program in the Schar School of Policy and Government is 22nd, an 18-place jump from 2018. In the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, communication is 36th, up from the 51-75 group in 2018, and economics is 38th.
“These rankings are a great testimony of Mason’s intellectual intensity and commitment to excellence and diversity as a top-tier research university,” Mason Provost S. David Wu said. “I’m immensely proud of the achievements of our amazing faculty.”
In the 2018 Academic Rankings of World Universities, also by the ShanghaiRankings Consultancy, Mason was ranked in the 201-300 group worldwide and in the top 95 nationally. Those rankings are generally released in August.
After the top 100, institutions are ranked in groups of 50 through No. 200, and groups of 100 through No. 500.
The annual program rankings are based on indicators such as the number of papers authored by an institution in an academic subject; the average impact of those papers, as measured by InCites; the number of papers published in top journals and conferences in an academic subject; and the number of staff at an institution winning significant awards in an academic subject.
In the top 100 this year (all ranked in the 76-100 group) are Mason programs in education, geography, library and information science, and political science. Overall, 21 Mason programs were ranked.
