Schar School’s Nicogossian’s Summer Semester: Volunteering at a Free Medical Clinic

When he is not directing the Center for Study of International Medical Policies and Practices, Schar School Distinguished Research Professor Arnauld Nicogossian stays busy in the summer in the field, doing what he enjoys most—teaching and helping. Nicogossian, above left, volunteers twice a week at the Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic’s Manassas, Va., location where he sees patients and mentors nursing students from a number of regional universities. The clinic, he says, “is free for those who cannot afford to pay for health care. I like it because it helps minimize the socio-economic determinants of health, beyond the discourse.” Also pictured, nurse practitioner, right, Sofi Geart, and Alexandra Luevano, director of the clinic. Meanwhile, Nicogossian is at work on the fourth edition of Space Physiology and Medicine: From Evidence to Practice, a book about medical responses in non-Earth environments.
