Kathy Cagle is April Employee of the Month

Kathy Cagle, receiving her award from Mason President Ángel Cabrera, has been secretary pro-tem to the Board of Visitors since 2011, but still says, "I don't think a day goes by that I don't learn something new." Photo by Lathan Goumas.

For Kathy Cagle, secretary pro-tem to George Mason University’s Board of Visitors, there really is no such thing as an average day.

“I don’t think a day goes by when I don’t learn something new,” she said.

Cagle works in the Office of the President, where she manages, guides and all-around problem-solves in support of the board. Cagle schedules, organizes and manages the BOV’s meetings, takes the minutes, and ensures documents are signed and delivered.

She also organizes the people who help make the meetings work, from the video and audio technicians to the caterers and Parking Services staff.

“I can’t say this enough,” Cagle said, “I don’t do this by myself, but it does land in my lap to make sure it gets done.”

For her tireless efforts, Cagle is April’s Employee of the Month.

“I was absolutely gobsmacked,” Cagle said of the recognition. “I’m typically not at a loss for words, ask anyone who knows me. But I was speechless.”

A Fairfax County native, Cagle began at Mason 2006 and has had her current position since 2011. She said she enjoys having the ability to help others and work as a team.

“When Kathy is involved in an event, we know that she will have more than enough information and forethought concerning each and every detail,” said Julie Gladbach, a University Events senior manager. “She has a challenging job and she must constantly juggle not only multiple tasks, but the multiple personalities [involved]. She has a knack for keeping the atmosphere calm, cool and collected.”

It’s no surprise, then, that one of Cagle’s top CliftonStrengths skills is harmony, a trait she said she has always had, and one which has helped her in all the jobs she has worked.

It also fits with how Cagle said she finds comfort in the change of seasons on the Mason campus.

“In the spring, when all the trees are in bloom around the pond, it’s just magnificent,” Cagle said. “And on the other side, in the fall when all the trees turn red and gold, it’s incredible.”

How she got here:

After an early career in banking and the student loan industry, I took time off to stay home with my daughters (Kristin and Ashley) and nephews. In 2006, it was time to re-enter the job market and begin my second career. My first job at Mason was in the Office of Student Financial Aid before moving to the Office of the President in 2008.

Best day on the job:

I have many best days. Whenever an event or project is successful, the sense of accomplishment is wonderful.

What she likes best about working at Mason:

The best part about working at Mason is all the wonderful people I have the privilege of working with to successfully accomplish all those projects and events. The seamless teamwork of all involved is amazing.

What she likes doing when she’s not working:

Spending time with family, both near and far, and enjoying time at the Delaware seashore.
