Work associated with the Core Campus Project will continue with the removal of the 16 willow oak trees that line Wilkins Plaza from Tuesday, March 12, through Friday, March 15.
The trees are being removed to accommodate the refurbishment and extension of the plaza to Southside. New trees that will line both sides of the plaza will be more appropriate for our area and drop fewer leaves, making the plaza safer for pedestrians.
Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to find alternate routes as there will be intermittent closures around the entire plaza. Safety precautions will be in place at the work site. Expect noise related to this work.
Almost all the lumber will be recycled and used to build the benches located in the public areas and outside of classrooms in the new academic building. The lumber is being harvested now because it needs to be dried and milled before it can be reused.
What is not used in the new building will be given to Facilities for other campus projects.
