As part of his 2018 Listening Tour as the Virginia health commissioner, M. Norman Oliver will hold a town hall meeting on Mason’s Fairfax Campus, in Dewberry Hall at the Johnson Center from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30.
Oliver is learning about regional priorities and hearing from communities, individuals and organizations that are dedicated to promoting public health in Northern Virginia. One of the major themes he will address is the need to ensure living conditions that promote health and foster well-being, including for Virginia’s most vulnerable populations—rural communities and communities of color.
All Mason community members are welcome to join, participate in the question and answer session and share their thoughts on the future of public health in the commonwealth.
Prior to his current role, Oliver was the Walter M. Seward Professor and chair of the department of family medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and he then served as the deputy commissioner for population health for the Virginia Department of Health.
His record of accomplishments in public health includes work and research in health inequities and addressing the health-related social needs of vulnerable communities. His most recent work focuses on improving public understanding of racial and ethnic health disparities, as well as finding ways to reduce or eliminate them.
