George Mason University’s Child Development Center (CDC) access road will be closed to traffic, and its parking lot will be modified during the first part of September, as Fairfax Water replaces its existing water storage tank on the Fairfax Campus. Demolition of the existing tank will begin sometime after Labor Day. New tank construction will follow demolition, with a timeline to be announced.
The style of tank will be changed to ensure water quality is maintained (see rendering aoove), and a Mason logo will be installed on the completed tank.
Patriot Circle and University Drive should not be affected by the construction. However, construction-related vehicles may be staged on the roads between the CDC and Northeast Modules. Use caution when driving in this area.
Campus water pressure should not be affected during construction, due to the upgrade of the Braddock Road transmission line, which connects water lines on campus via Campus Drive.
The project is scheduled to be completed prior to the start of the spring 2020 semester.
The existing tank controls water pressure on campus as well as surrounding areas in Fairfax County and the City of Fairfax. These areas currently experience lower delivery pressures than those typical elsewhere in the Fairfax Water system. The replacement tank, constructed on the same site, will be taller to increase delivery pressures.
