Today, the School of Nursing celebrated the service of six retiring faculty members with a donation to the General Hazel Johnson-Brown Scholarship Fund. Dr. Kathleen Gaffney, Dr. Barbara Hatcher, Dr. Joanne Iannitto, Dr. Marie Kodadek, Dr. Margaret Miklancie, and Dr. Renee Milligan retired at the end of the spring 2018 semester with a collective 106 years of nursing service at Mason.
The Gen. Hazel Johnson-Brown Scholarship Fund celebrates the service of former Mason faculty member, Gen. Johnson-Brown, who was also the first African American woman to become an Army general and chief of the Army Nurse Corps. She made military history in 1979 when she was promoted to brigadier general and, at the same time, to command of the 7,000 nurses in the Army Nurse Corps. Gen. Johnson-Brown, after her Army retirement, headed the American Nurses Association’s government relations unit and founded CHHS’s Center for Health Policy Research and Ethics (originally known as the Center for Health Policy).
In lieu of retirement gifts, this $750.00 donation recognizes the retiring six members’ service at Mason. It will financially assist a deserving Mason nursing student while honoring General Johnson-Brown’s Mason legacy. Through this donation, our retiring faculty will continue to support nursing education and empower a future nurse by offsetting the cost of his or her education at Mason.
