Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe joins Mason's Schar School as a Distinguished Visiting Professor

Fairfax, VA - The Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University is pleased to announce the appointment of former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe as Distinguished Visiting Professor.

McAuliffe, who has had a distinguished career in government, politics, and business, will lead a series of policy forums for the Mason community and the general public on key issues. He will be a guest lecturer in Schar School classes on national and international affairs, with a primary focus on how workers can succeed in the increasingly global economy. And McAuliffe will offer regular commentary on key policy issues through opinion columns, lectures, and symposia.

“The ability to attract Gov. McAuliffe as a Distinguished Visiting Professor exemplifies why the Schar School is one of the leading policy and government schools in the nation,” Mason President Ángel Cabrera said. “Mason students, faculty, and researchers will benefit greatly from his experiences and insights across a broad spectrum of topics and issues.”

“We are honored to welcome Gov. McAuliffe to our distinguished faculty,” said Schar School Dean Mark J. Rozell. “He joins an impressive group of faculty members that includes not only leading scholars but also policy practitioners such as former members of Congress, ambassadors, and heads of federal agencies, among others. We look forward to the many contributions that Gov. McAuliffe will make to the classroom, public forums, and commentary on the state of public affairs in the U.S. and abroad.”

McAuliffe served as the Commonwealth’s 72nd governor from 2014-2018 and as chair of the National Governors Association from 2016-2017. He was chair of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, chair of the Democratic National Committee (2001-2005), and co-chair of President Bill Clinton’s 1996 re-election campaign. McAuliffe was a visiting fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2012.

"I'm thrilled to join the Schar School and Mason community," McAuliffe said. "I've long admired the students and faculty here and am excited to work with them to explore some of the biggest challenges and opportunities for families living and working in the new American economy."

The Schar School of Policy and Government is one of the 10 schools and colleges of George Mason University. The Schar School has approximately 2,000 students, 80 full-time faculty members, and 11 degree programs offered on Mason’s campuses in Fairfax and Arlington, Va.
