The ninth annual Communication Forum, sponsored by the Insight Committee of George Mason University’s Department of Communication, will present #RealNews2017, which will “examine the gathering, dispensing and presenting of news in our social-mediated world.”
The event will start at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 24 in the Hub Ballroom on the Fairfax Campus. It will bring together students and working communication professionals to gain a better understanding of current communication trends and provide career advice and mentoring.
MSNBC’s Chris Matthews will be the keynote speaker.

“The whole idea of what news is and what can be trusted has been put into the limelight,” said Suzanne Mims, who teaches a social media class at George Mason. “Students have to understand how news is collected and dispensed and how it should be done accurately and truthfully. The focus is how people working in journalism, public relations and marketing, and social media all deal with news and have to work together to make sure that the truth is told.”
Panelists include Jack Speer, NPR anchor; Pam Jenkins, president of Weber Shandwick, a global public relations firm; Kevin Hall, communications chief for U.S. Senator Mark Warner (D-Va.); and Anthony Shop, chief strategy officer and cofounder of digital agency Social Driver.
