For Meredith Muckerman, communications and technology manager in George Mason University’s Environmental Health and Safety Office, a favorite aspect of her job is that it can be different day to day.
“I love the variety of my position,” she said. “It’s constantly challenging and never dull.”
Muckerman is George Mason’s October Employee of the Month. She is responsible for overseeing training, document management, and internal and external communications, and representing the Department of Safety, Emergency, and Enterprise Risk Management at events and functions.
“She’s fast, incredibly efficient, very creative and has had a hand in everything we’ve put together,” said Dave Farris, executive director of Safety and Emergency Management.
Muckerman, who has been at Mason for four years, began as the training and outreach coordinator for Environmental Health and Safety. She was promoted to communications and technology manager in 2015. Muckerman compiles annual reports and also creates the graphics that help promote the annual statewide Fire Safety Symposium, which is organized and presented by Mason.
“Meredith is very competent, dedicated, service oriented, and offers a great deal of assistance on a moment’s notice, said Julie Zobel, assistant vice president, Safety, Emergency, and Enterprise Risk Management, and Muckerman’s supervisor. “She is always willing to step up and meet a challenge.”
Muckerman is thankful to her colleagues whom she said define every positive experience she’s had in the department.
“Everyone on our team works hard, but we have a lot of fun to balance things out,” she said. “I've also been exposed to a lot of amazing opportunities thanks to my colleagues. For example, meeting Anderson Cooper when he was on campus for former President Barack Obama's town hall on gun violence in America; being able to observe our Emergency Operations Center in action; and contributing to the university's Enterprise Risk Management program.”
Muckerman said her work inspired her decision to pursue a master’s degree in communication, with a concentration on risk, crisis and health communication. She began the program in the fall at Mason.
Muckerman received her award from President Ángel Cabrera on Oct. 2.
