Tyler Cowen hosts former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers for conversation on Sept. 6

Summers

Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers is the next guest in the “Conversations with Tyler” series.

The 90-minute conversation between Summers and George Mason University economist Tyler Cowen will touch on “automation, productivity, taxes, social order and pretty much any topic in the financial news,” Cowen said.

Summers was Secretary of the Treasury under President Bill Clinton and served as director of the National Economic Council under President Barack Obama. He is the only treasury secretary to leave the office with a national budget in surplus. Summers is also president emeritus and a professor at Harvard University. He has been recognized as one of the world’s most influential thinkers by Time, Foreign Policy, Prospect and The Economist magazines, among many others.

Cowen regularly conducts wide-ranging, on-stage conversations with thought leaders from a diversity of backgrounds. Previous guests in the “Conversations” series include U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse, Peter Thiel, Nate Silver, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Camille Paglia and Malcolm Gladwell. (Previous talks are available on the Mercatus events page.)

Summers and Cowen will exchange ideas from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the W Hotel in NW Washington, D.C., with a reception afterward. Admission is free but registration is required at this site.
