Spurred by strong showings from the Antonin Scalia Law School, and economics and communication studies, George Mason University was ranked in the top 100 of U.S. institutions and among the top 300 worldwide, according to the prestigious ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
Among Virginia’s universities, only George Mason, the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University are in the top 300 in the world.
Mason was ranked 26th worldwide in economics studies, 29th in law and 40th in communication.
The consultancy’s annual Academic Ranking of World Universities is based on indicators such as articles published in the journals Nature and Science, articles logged in the Science Citation and Social Sciences Citation indexes, the number of alumni and faculty winning prestigious awards such as the Nobel Prize, and “per capita” performance.
There also is a review of faculty and alumni data from 1,500 institutions around the world. After the top 100, schools are ranked into groups of 50 through No. 200, and groups of 100 through No. 500.
Mason is ranked 201 to 300 worldwide and 71-99 nationally.
Mason also was ranked 51-75 worldwide in political sciences and library and information science, 76-100 in education, 101-150 in finance and management, and 151-200 in psychology and public health.
