George Mason University ranks among the top 300 universities worldwide, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities. In the United States, George Mason ranked 127 out of 711 colleges and universities featured in a “best value” ranking from Money magazine.
The global rankings have been compiled and published by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy since 2009. Individual rankings are listed for the top 100 schools. After that they are grouped in batches of 50 and then 100; Mason placed in the 201-300 group.
This year, the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy added specific disciplines to its global rankings. Of 300 schools surveyed, Mason’s economics programs ranked 26th of 300. The Antonin Scalia Law School at Mason ranked 29th of 100 law schools. Communication placed 40th of 100 universities, and public administration came in 46th of 100.
In the category of Library and Information Science, Mason’s information science program placed in the 51-75 group of 100 schools profiled. Management programs ranked in the 101-150 group of 400 schools studied. Education placed in the 76-100 ranking of 300 schools evaluated, and public health programs placed in the 151-200 category among 500 programs surveyed.
Mason’s political science program came in between 51 and 75 of 200 schools studied. Business administration placed in the 101-150 group of 200 schools surveyed with finance placing 101-150 of 200 schools.
Also this week Money magazine ranked 711 U.S. colleges for overall value, with Mason in the top 20 percent of the rankings at number 127. The magazine used 27 data points to determine the ranking, including test scores, costs for attending the school with and without need-based grants, post-graduation salary after five years, and the percentage of low-income students who become upper middle class.
