George Mason taps global leadership expert to lead School of Business

Peiperl

Fairfax, Va. (June 8, 2017)  – George Mason University has named Maury Peiperl dean of the School of Business, selecting an expert in global leadership who will strengthen the school’s reputation for driving innovation and forging strategic partnerships.

Dr. Peiperl is currently the director of the Cranfield School of Management and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Cranfield University in England. He assumes his new role at Mason in August.

“A competitive business school that has impact must reach across disciplines to solve bigger and broader problems,” Peiperl said. “To augment Mason’s excellent undergraduate and growing graduate programs, we need to connect better with working professionals. We need to think on a global level, a lifelong learning level, and be a partner in the community, one that allows everyone to learn what they need, when they need it, in order to face the complexities the world keeps throwing at them.”

“Dr. Peiperl is a leader who will create an exciting long-term vision for the school,” Mason Provost S. David Wu said. “The business school has the opportunity to engage even more broadly with the business community, nationally, while remaining a primary source of innovation and talent development.”

Mason’s School of Business graduated 1,300 undergraduate and master’s students in the spring. The school is currently ranked 53rd nationally in U.S. News & World Report’s latest evaluation of part-time MBA programs, a significant jump from its position at 74th the previous year. The school is consistently ranked among the nation’s top 100 best undergraduate programs and has leveraged Mason’s proximity to Washington, D.C., to attract talented faculty from the government and private sector, impact policymakers at all levels, and provide a dynamic education to the region’s workforce.

Dr. Peiperl will continue that trajectory by strengthening existing business and government partnerships and by connecting areas of management, research and teaching to ensure the School of Business, already an engine for economic development in Northern Virginia, remains a place of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Dr. Peiperl is skilled in creating platforms to support student and faculty mobility through collaboration. That will fortify the School of Business’ growing student body and the university’s culture of faculty and scholarship excellence.

Peiperl, 55, a Washington, D.C., native, has been director of the Cranfield School of Management since 2015. Prior to that he was Professor of Leadership and Strategic Change at IMD in Switzerland. He was a professor at the London Business School from 1992 to 2004, and has held affiliate appointments at MIT, the University of Maryland, HEC Paris, and Templeton College in Oxford, England.

He earned his BSE in electrical engineering and computer science at Princeton, and his MBA, AM in psychology, and PhD in organizational behavior at Harvard, where he was a Dean’s Doctoral Fellow. He also is the co-author of a leading textbook on change management, Managing Change: Cases and Concepts (McGraw-Hill), as well as many academic articles in peer reviewed journals.
