Be flexible: Mason encourages flexible work options this summer

Departments and supervisors across the university are encouraged to increase their employees’ use of flexible work schedules between June 18 and Aug. 12 as part of the “Flexible Summer @ Mason” initiative, George Mason University’s Human Resources and Payroll team said.

George Mason has offered flexible work options since 2002, said Wendi Carroll, life/work connections specialist for Mason Human Resources and Payroll.

“Over the summer we anticipate an increased use of compressed schedules such as working four 10-hour days, or four nine-hour days and one four-hour day,” Carroll said.

“Whether employees use compressed schedules to free up valuable weekday time for errands, leisure activities, family or other life demands, flex time to manage children’s summer camp schedules, or telework to eliminate a stressful commute, we hope ‘Flexible Summer @ Mason’ will increase faculty and staff well-being by enabling them to have a more enjoyable summer,” said Linda Harber, vice president for human resources/payroll and faculty/staff life.

It is up to employees and their supervisors to work out a flexible schedule that meets the department’s needs and ensures employees still meet their scheduled hours. No departments will be closed during the summer.

Telework VA!, a program of the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, will visit the Fairfax Campus at noon May 18 to offer supervisor-specific training on flexible work. The session will be videoconferenced to the Arlington and the Science and Technology Campuses. To register, please visit hr.gmu.edu/learning/hr.php.

In addition, Human Resources and Payroll will host drop-in sessions to answer questions. Visit the Human Resources and Payroll homepage for dates, times and locations of sessions.
