George Mason University has been recognized as a Top 50 university in two new national rankings released this week.
George Mason placed No. 47 in a new Times Higher Education Young University Rankings of 200 colleges and universities around the world. Mason climbed 12 spots since the 2016 rankings—up from No. 59. Only two U.S. universities were ahead of Mason in the survey.
The London-based education data provider Times Higher Education measured “the teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income. The methodology is recalibrated to account for the youth of the institution, with reputation counting for less to reflect special characteristics of younger universities.”
A “young university” is one less than 50 years old.
Also this week, a new ranking by Business First, a Buffalo, N.Y.-based publication owned by American City Business Journals, placed Mason at No. 50 of 499 public universities studied in the poll. Mason was No. 68 in the same survey last year.
Criteria provided by the National Center for Education Statistics and the Census Bureau included colleges and universities that “offer the best educational experiences to their students,” according to the announcement.
Business First’s 22-part formula considered admissions selection processes, retention and graduation rates, earnings by alumni, available resources, affordability of tuition and housing, faculty and student body diversity, and the economic status of the surrounding community.
