George Mason University Executive Vice President and Provost S. David Wu has announced that Mark J. Rozell, Professor of Public Policy and Acting Dean of George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government, will be the founding dean of the School. In addition, he will hold the Ruth D. Hazel and John T. Hazel, M.D., Faculty Chair in Public Policy.
“Mark’s work as interim dean has been invaluable,” Mason President Ángel Cabrera said. “In addition to his teaching, research and publishing, Mark guided us through an ambitious merger between the public policy school and the government and international affairs unit. He has been diligent in developing the resources needed by the school’s unparalleled faculty to propel the Schar School to national and international prominence.”
Dr. Rozell is a political scientist and author of nine books and editor of twenty books on various topics in U.S. government and politics including the presidency, religion and politics, media and politics, and interest groups in elections. He has testified before Congress several times regarding separation of powers issues and has lectured extensively in the U.S. and abroad on similar topics. He writes columns for major news dailies and is consulted frequently by media for his expertise in U.S. national and state politics.
Dean Rozell received his Ph.D. in Politics from the University of Virginia. He has served as the Acting Dean of the Schar School since 2013 and previously as director of the Master of Public Policy program. He came to Mason in 2004 from The Catholic University of America, where he was Ordinary Professor and Chair of the Department of Politics.
Mason’s Schar School of Policy and Government was established in 2014 with the merger of the School of Public Policy and the Department of Public and International Affairs. It is among the largest schools of its type in the country with over 2000 students, 14 degree programs, and nearly 90 full-time faculty. The School is currently ranked 10th in the nation among the most innovative public service schools by Best Value Schools and its Masters in Public Policy program is currently ranked 11th by Graduateschools.com.
