Asking the tough questions with a smile is second nature for Andrea George, office assistant for special projects in the College of Science, and George Mason University’s October Employee of the Month.
George was nominated by Stephanie Barksdale, a research associate and microbiology technician with the College of Science, who says George’s hard work in supporting a multimillion-dollar defense grant, among several other responsibilities, helps the office thrive.
George assists with a research project funded by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and performs a number of critical tasks including hiring, budgeting and editing monthly progress reports. She also supports other grants and special projects for the School of Business, the Forensic Science Program and the dean’s office for the College of Science.
If that’s not enough, she recently helped Joel Schnur, research professor in biological and molecular science, prepare and later win a grant for his research. Schnur said George plays a vital role in the project’s success and continued funding.
“She provides innovative solutions as we interact with Facilities to keep our laboratories operating. Her can-do spirit permeates the group as we face new research challenges,” Schnur said.
Associate Professor Monique van Hoek says George’s unique perspective, combined with her hard work and dedication to all projects, makes her one of the team’s greatest contributors and cheerleaders.
George said she’s the one who is lucky to work with such an outstanding staff.
“They are all amazing, particularly at the Science and Technology Campus. It’s like a family. Everybody goes out of their way to help everybody else, and it inspires you,” George said.
George will be formally presented with this award by President Ángel Cabrera at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3, in his office on the fifth floor of Merten Hall. Her family, co-workers and friends are all encouraged to attend the ceremony. Those unable to attend the ceremony may watch the livestream at the Working at George Mason University Facebook page.
