Rehabilitation Science undergraduate degree debuts at Mason this fall

George Mason University is preparing to accept the first students into its new Rehabilitation Science undergraduate program this fall.

The Bachelor of Science in Rehabilitation Science, offered through the College of Health and Human Services, got the greenlight this spring when the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia issued facilitated approval, making it the first and only program of its kind in Virginia.

The new degree is an innovation in educating students who are interested in rehabilitation-related careers, said Andrew Guccione, chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Science.

“Our graduates will be able to meet a growing need within our current health care system and in community-based post-rehabilitation programs,” he said.

Rehabilitation science students will have access to the advanced Functional Performance Laboratory at Mason that allow students to conduct real-world research. The lab puts an emphasis on helping injured people learn how to complete daily activities.

After completing Mason’s Rehabilitation Science undergraduate program, students will be ready to go on to graduate physical therapy and occupational therapy programs. They will also be ready to work with patients with spinal cord injuries, as well as those affected by cancers or strokes.

The college also offers a PhD, a graduate certificate, and a minor in rehabilitation science.
