Students in the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies’ Nutrition Assessment and Surveillance class volunteered during Robinson Secondary School’s Culinary Challenge and Wellness Expo in Fairfax on March 12.
The event had local area schools send teams to create recipes for healthier and more nutritious meals and snacks. Mason’s graduate students hosted a table at the event. They measured participants’ height and weight to calculate their BMI and helped them see the comparison to standard BMI charts. Participants also completed questionnaires and surveys asking about healthy eating habits and physical activity. Attendees were given healthy recipes, like how to make a balanced smoothie, and healthy tips on how to manage weight.
