On Monday, Nov. 16, Fenwick Library staff members began the colossal task of coordinating the move of some one million materials from the original building into the new 150,000-square-foot addition.
Special Collections—rare books and archival information—and other materials on the second, third and fourth floors of the original building are on the move this week.
A nifty calendar that tracks what materials are moving and when they will move can be found on fenwickfocus.gmu.edu, a University Libraries blog featuring regular updates about the construction project.
If you think you’ll need a book for final exams, go ahead and check it out now, said Diane Smith, associate university librarian.
“As we begin the move to the new Fenwick Library, there may be some instances where users cannot physically access a book that they require,” she said.
In those cases, patrons can fill out a book request form here on the University Libraries website.
Library services will continue as normal for the remainder of the semester. Study rooms in Fenwick will remain open for users.
The library will close for a month at the end of the semester and reopen on Jan. 19, but materials may not fully be moved into the new space until February.
Items requested during the closure can be picked up at the Gateway Library main information desk. Service at Gateway and George Mason University’s other libraries will not be impacted by the move.
