Selecting just two of the numerous outstanding supervisors at Mason is a daunting task. Mason is a great place to work, in large part, because of the support so many great supervisors. The Outstanding Supervisor Award, sponsored by the Mason Staff Senate, strives to acknowledge those supervisors who shine above all others.

This year’s recipients, Margaret (Peggy) Aldrich, associate registrar, Prince William Campus, and Jean-Pierre (J.P.) Auffret, director of executive programs in the School of Management, stood out from a pool of 18 candidates for the ability to create work environment that allowed their staff to grow and flourish.

Aldrich’s nominators, Brittani Fairchild, Pennie J. O’Brien, Betty Andrews, Michele Coleman and Mary Ann Rackowski drew a picture of Aldrich as a warm and caring supervisor, dedicated to the university and her staff, and always ready with a smile. When remarking on her leadership style, her nominators wrote: “She is very open to suggestions, and she realizes that each of our staff members know the workings of programs intimately, and may therefore be the best authorities on those programs.” Her professionalism combined with warmth results in staff members who feel privileged to work for her.

Auffret’s nominators Clodagh Bassett, Erin Mooney, Dolores Izer-Horn, and Lynda Carmichael all shared sentiments about what it’s like to work with this outstanding leader. Their accolades were plentiful. Bassett perhaps summed his supervisory style up best: “He has the ability to motivate, give direction/guidance when it is sought and is always available to mentor. He encourages his staff to think for themselves and to reach beyond what they though themselves capable of.”  Each nominator also commented on his unflappable commitment to the university and his sense of humor.

While these two supervisors’ accolades were remarkable, the other nominees deserve recognition as well:

  • Colette Brooks
  • Marquita Chamblee
